I'm not happy with the flex in my LX cranks. And after almost ripping my calf muscle out a few years ago i dont trust square taper BB's either.

any recomendations for a new crankset? should i just get some mid-grade aluminum cranks (raceface, truvativ)? or should i get some chro-mo's (profile, etc). chromo cranks would be heavier, but durability is high. what do you guys say?

Race Face North Shore DH. Isis, super strong. I have used them for over 2 years on various bikes and they still arent bent, or anything.

Truvativ trials cranks are cheap (100 something including bashring!) and also come in isis.

Threshold used to make a sick bashring with intergrated chainring that mounted like a normal chainwheel. However today I doubt you could find them because aluminum cranks should take the abuse trials riders dish out. Back in 97 cranks were way harder to find.

go w/ the northshore cranks, I have used both RaceFace and truvativ, the hussefelt is not as stiff, it is a noticable difference. The extra cash is worth the stiffness and strength

I know you said you fear taperd BB's, but if by chance, that is still your price range...try some FSA power pros...94 5bolt and super strong for a cheap cheap taperd crankset, and get a real nice BB.

3 piece cranks are a bit bulky and heavy for trials, but they will be stiff im sure, stick with the raceface.

I'd go for the Evolve DH x-type. If you like wide, the new heavy duty RF stuff is on. You get a sweet platform on the non-driveside too because the crank bbcup and bb shell basically all line up, so if you ever need to land on that side it's pretty sweet.

I've been running diabolus since the dead of winter, and a heck of a lot of park and street lately, lots of landing on my pedals, and pedal bonks, and missed fufanus mean the cranks have been taking a beating. They look it too, if that matters, being anodised aluminium they can't help it though. poor buggers look to have had a worse time than my old hussefelts did after tree odd years too.

now, i said go for the evolve, because I (and i'm apparently alone) think they look nicer and you get the advantages of x-type with a super huge price cut. Man have you seen the relative prices on these things? It's like 20% off and all you give up is sharp edges and the fancy alloy, so far as i can tell.

anyway, good luck with the trials thing, i seem to be relegated to not being able to properly pedal-kick :humbug:

No offense creep, but trials is way different then street. any BB with external cups (to date) is a bad idea.

Look if you get a decent splined bb and some average-> above average cranks you will be fine. Back in the days of square taper it was diferent and hardcore cats like Lenoksy ran profile 3 pcs. Things have changed.

I also recommend the North Shore cranks. Didn't know they were discontinued but that is actually a good thing since you can get them for about half what I paid. Check this link.

my buddy stripped the pedal threads on both sides of his hussies riding trials, he doesnt weight much and is real smooth,

The FSA V drives are solid for trials, but if you wanna run smallter than a 22t, youd prob be best getting some FFW cranks or something.
