The way i think of stunts for mtb are compariable to park rails for snowboarding in a sence. Ill shred backcountry and tree runs all day and never get tired of it but its always fun to go jib some rails once and again. Bridges should be dedicated to thier own trails and sections not in race courses. The tech stuff is where the real riding is at, keep the northshore as a sideshow and when its needed.

On another note a gnarly rythm section at platty would be sick (something greater but not equal to dominion).

If you're investing time into building new stunts and features at Platty, spend a little extra time and build with rock and dirt instead of wood. The features will last longer, will be rideable under more varied conditions, and the challenge will be riding the feature instead of wondering if it's going to break beneath you..

Look at the rock-armored steeps and trannys that North Shore builders use to keep their trails in good shape. Check out the beautiful rockwork berms that they build- sweet features that take some work but then don't require constant maintenance like wood features.

Building a good trail is more than just clearing it out. Bench cut where necessary to create a rideable tread. Rock-in the steep chutes so they don't just endlessly erode. Build up the trannys with dirt and rock instead of wood, and it'll last decades instead of months.

It's a shame to see so many wooden stunts in the NE that obviously took a lot of time to build, and are now, after only a couple years, completely unrideable...

Does anyone know of a person with a mini excavator that would not mind it seeing some abuse? Or would anyone be willing to try and organize a fund raiser to purchase a used one? Sooooo much could be done with one of those super small mini excavators. I agree with the peeps that the good stuff thats going to last needs to be made out of dirt and rock. The problem is working with those materials is so manual. I have nagged Laz for a mini excavator for years so I dont think we will ever see him going for one. It is a shame cause it will add so much to the trails.

Such a machine would have to be:
1) small enough to get into the woods
2) light enough to flip it back upright with the help of a bunch of people when we flip it by mistake ( you know its going to happen)
3) also light enough so it does not tear ass all over the trail gouging it away ( this is why the large excavator or dozer is no good. Those beasts do more harm then good)
4) enough strength to pickup a decent slab of rock
5) able to work at bizzare, machine destructing grades

Man, I'm getting psyched to get up there and build trails. Lots of good ideas.
An excavator would be great. Any idea how much they cost to rent?
I've learned the hard way that its awful hard to find dirt at Platty. A couple of truck loads of dirt would be great for dirting in kickers and trans.

About $175 a day last time I checked. New ones cost as much as a car- $15,000. Not cheap.

But one person with an excavator is worth 5-6 people doing it manually. And it opens up possibilities for jumpy trails, too. I rode some sweet machine-built trails in Scotland that were just riddled with little launches, tables and stepdowns sidecut out of the slope. Good stuff.

Would be great if there were someone local who had access to one. Or can we get a local construction worked hooked on DH? Wink

We just finished up this switchback in NYC. 5 days, 30+ people. A shitload of work, but it'll be around for 100 years...

From this:

To this:

btw, Ford, there's a sweet gap line if you launch off the top of the switchback and land on the downslope below the turn- 12-15 foot trail gap...

Is that for Highbridge trails? Where can I get one of those green parks dept. jackets? Could be useful at the Piff jumps in Prospect Park BK. Seriously if you have any extras i'll buy $$$ immediately.

The mini excevator with the blade on the front would be key. I spent alot of time in one of those over the past summer doing landscaping. I'd try to find a used one in the local Roxbury classifieds...it souldnt be too hard to find. One thing to make sure of is to get a metal instead of the shitty rubber tracks that dont grip for shit and last not much longer than a year.
