Needless to say little work was done to the 4x course this past weekend. Dieter got the gate put into place, I stayed home, warm and dry. Therefore we will try to do as much as we can the Fri. before the first race May 6th, as usual any help would be appreciated.
The course will probably be unchanged for the first race, but we do plan to build burms on the first turn going into the trail and the last turn coming out of the trail. We would also like to build jumps across the bottom of the ski hill. I was thinking table, double, step, double, table. and a step-up in the first straight before turning into the trail. If the dirt holds out we would also like to built a couple jumps on the trail.
There will jackets for the series winners and Dieter is working on additions to the monthly prize list.
Hope to see you there.
Dieter and George, your happy 4x maintenance crew

I was a little hesitant about racing the first 4x but, all sounds good so why not. One question, how does racing 4x work with the DH races too? Is the 4x on saturday?

i think what he was asking is there a way to make things work if you want to race both DH and MTX? if i'm wrong on that i'm asking the same question myself.

Well i think you would have to sacrifice half a day of dh practice and race mtx saturday... then practice sunday morning for dh and race... its possible
and will the road gap be in the mtx course?

Can we just put some slalom gates up on the bunny hill and race a grass slalom Saturday PM? That 4x course just isn't very raceable, or safe to race.... I raced it last time, and there what, 7 people in pro-ex? Only Soukup and I used 4x bikes. It's pretty much not at all 4x, and pretty much 4 man DH on a track that is wide enough for 1 person.
There was some passing last time, but there was also some real shady riding going on due to the course.
I would be for scrapping the idea of racing 4x on that course altogether and building a nice oldschool slalom track.
i've been considering racing mtx, but whats the point if its not a real mtx course. all mtx is basically a scaled up bmx track down a hill for 26". I was considering racing it hardtail too.

At the first race we ask if there was any problem passing, the response we got then was that the course was fine. Which is it??
As far as making the course more BMX like, we're working on it. We will definitely have more BMX style jumps across the bottom of the course and hopefully some up on the course, but it depends on how much dirt we can get.

Well, there was tons of passing, but like I say it was shady stuff. People on DH bikes were just late-apexing everything, or even cutting way inside up top, inside of where the course tape should be. That radii of the berms in the top section prevented anything except block passing, which the gradient of the hill, for the most part favored.
We know that this is really not a 4x course but we are trying to do the best with what we have been given to work with.It is a work in progress(slow as it may seem)and is a matter of $$$ and people to help work on it.Right now it is basically myself and one other old bmx guy(Dieter Ward) working on it.We have plans to build it into more of a true 4x course with bmx stuff on it and we have some sponsors lined up to work with us so we will have some nice prizes to give out.We would welcome any suggestions and help we can get.We will be working on it the friday(May 5)before the race and if anyone can come up to help that would be great.
What sections on it do you consider to be unsafe?Perhaps we could put some effort into this before the first race.

George, I'm planning on coming up on Friday, so I'll see you on the track! The biggest complaint that I heard voiced by many people is the wooden table. At race speed it is way too short, and doesn't have a real landing. That's what took out that female racer and it really made for some scary times in my heats as well. IMO that sould get scrapped in favor of something made out of dirt that is more appropriately scaled. The right hander immediately after that needs tighter taping across the inside, as people were basically cutting it off the inside and using that as a drop. Also the last right hander on the track, the big sweeper needs some work. It is way too loose and rocky to be taken at speed on anything except a DH bike, and even though it's so wide, it is pretty much impossible to ride anyother way than single file...

Amen, and we are definitely going to do something to fix that. The purpose of the bridge was to still be able to use DH trail that runs under it, so I don't think we will be able to just get rid of it. Dieter has suggested using dirt to ramp the back side more and for now I think that is what we will try to do.

easy enough

One of the first things we intend to do is tho build a burm here

4x is still a fairly new sport and I don't think that there is any true definition of what a 4x course is supposed to be. I know since it is sorta fashioned after BMX (that's where Eric Carter came from) that is most peoples impression of a 4x. But look at the courses for the Jeep series, they incorporated BMX, downhill, dual slalom and even shipping containers. If you watch the Movie Joe Kid on a Stingray, the History of BMX, the early downhill BMX tracks looked more like what we have at Plattekill, a series of drop-offs, not built up (BMX style) jumps. Like I said earlier we do intend to build more BMX stuff but personally I like the mix of both BMX, DH and whatever. Please give us comments on this.

My experience is in BMX not DH, but from what I know, yeah, this is how you get by someone in a turn. I also know how to block it.
As I said, please give us your comments. The 4x course is a work in progress and we do want to make it a success and as much fun for everyone as we can.

George, I learned how to race BMX from the Dunn family, so I only know how to race dirty.
