starnuts are major gay and a headlock is such a huge silly thing.
so, i have a thick walled steertube to work with, so could anyone give me any advice on how to tap etc for a bolt that would fit a 21mm id tube? I want to hollow out the bolt btw.
brainstorm?
you guys are up on bmx stuff you must know this sort of thing isn't exactly space cadet rambling.

Wouldnt that ring go star thing be the same idea as just locking down your stem with no starnut or topcap?

what's the ultimate goal here, to get rid of the star nut due to the thickness of the steerer tube?

I think i shouldn't have to deal with a starnut to begin with. It's an idiotic piece of technology. SO, now that i've proved to myself that you can't recycle the damn things (and i don't mean taking them out and then replacing them, I just mean reinstalling a fork) I'm back to ground zero. Now since i've got a monstrously thick steertube i figure it's perfect clay for the system that should've been standard, a hollow bolt! If it's used on a bloody crank it's not like i'm going to die by threading the inside of a tube and filling the space with another. A headlock is a hack, plain and simple, it's band-aid for a problem that shouldn't exist. This topic is driving me batty (when i'm online) beacuse everybody seems so farking content with that starfangled crap.

It allows fine headset adjustment.

um, no, the rivet that holds the two stars together often rips free and makes the thing useless, one of the many things that prompted this. Actually it's one of The main reasons. the damn starnut thing is a technological piece of shit.
the monkeys on ridemonkey seem to think it's a dangerous idea. Despite having had steertube problems I don't believe them, at least in this case. DW sez, just don't touch it. Ok then why are we using a crappy piece of sheet metal to gouge over a dozen lesions into it? I used to think a headlock was a wonderful idea, but really only because i ran into the stupidity of the starnut.
why am i the only person who is pissed off by the starnut as a piece of technlogy? Am i really the only person who thinks a headlock is a bandaid?

Hmmm i kinda get where you are coming from but at the same time i try not to concern myself about the starnut on my bike... Theres a million other parts on my bike that have a greater influence on my bike and riding than a starnut... as long as my nut stays put i dont have any complaints

if you have the right equipment to tap it out and you are able to get the right size topcap i dont see why it wouldnt be alright.
and welding in the starnut cap what you do is rip off stars and tack a bottom plate with a hole, put the nut in, then tack a top plate in that sandwiches it in there.

I rather like what felt did:
however i'd still rather a larger hole in the topcap, sort of like the cap on Holowtech II cranks.
