Alright, if youre here you wanna learn about trials. ill share my knowledge, however little it may be, with all of you. remember, im not a trialser, so i mgiht be wrong with some of this. feel free to add! trials is basically "try-all" biking (HAHA!). it involves hopping all over the place, pedal kicking, gapping, and the like. sometimes, with people who have a lot of skill, hopping is eliminated (Ryan Leech's 'Manifesto') and the moves flow into one another. Now ill break it down with the two schools of trials:

mod- competition oriented style and bikes, 20" tires that are really wide in rear, most of the time no seat, bashgaurd, SS, very light, look kind of like a fucked up BMX. cheaper than stock most of the time. stock riders refer to them as cheater bikes because it is soooo easy to learn trials on a mod

stock- a bit more street, but still used in comps. 26" tires, sometimes gearing (needed for comps). more common, but more expensive than mod. stocks can be decked out trials bikes with 26" wheels, or they can be an XC bike with a lower seat and some brake boosters

now for the two styles of trials:

natural- this is more popular in Europe. its trials on natural obstacles. gapping rocks, hopping up, off, and inbetween cliffs, rocks, and such.

urban- the style that branches out into the urban/street riding we see today and you will see a few elements from trials in it. favored by most because it is a more creative output. gapping railings, side hopping up a case of stairs, navigating the skinny of a jersey barrier, hopping onto a bench, 180'ing off, pedalkicking off, the possibilities here are endless.

now, the moves. everything you will ever need to know about trials is located at these sites:
http://www.trials-online.com/
http://assault.tk

add some more if you like. hopefully the forum will brighten up a bit....

well, mods only have a really fat tire on the rear....
with better trials riders there is very little hopping...
not sure what you mean b sometimes gearing on the stocks... by definition if you want ot compete you NEED to have gears.. no single speeds..
i'd also add biketrials.com
and mention trials is huge in europe.. not just the UK... esp. france/spain/czech/...

I'd say that street borrowed a lot more from BMX than it did from trials...

Here's some good trials stuff I've found:

These two sites have good "How to/Technique" sections.

http://www.trials-uk.com/
http://www.canberratrials.com/

Here are some recent videos which I thought were really good.
