hey my friends got a Norco team trials and he keeps dropping his chain constantly off the front ring. I think he has a 22tooth w/ a truvetitive(spelling?) crankset and bashring. Then just a normal 9speed rear. Is there anyway not to get them to drop? He said that road cassettes work but isnt sure. So any of you guys have the same problem? later mike.

Couldn't he go to some type of guide/tensioner? My Evil is Rock solid but probably too big for a trials application (size of plastic ring) Or shorten the chain. I can't imagine he is using all of those gears.

I think most of the rear cassettes are like 5 sp...so the chainline would not get way out of line...I think that might be why they don't drop chains....but, hopefully one of the riders in the know can answer

I put a Sora der. short cage on there and removed as much chain as I dare, this brought up the tension to almost elimnate dropping in all but the most extreme conditions. I also tried to double up the little spring in the der when i had a long cage der. but that was tough to do and the spring wore out quick.

The chainline has to be straight as possible.

I have tried all kinds of tensioners and even made a few of my own they all failed in some way. i don't know about dh tensioners that go up front looked like they would cause chain suck since trials riders back pedal a lot.
i always thought road der. where used more for the tighter ratios they provide, lightness and the fact that they work better with short cage road der., but I guess they could keep the chainline straighter there by preventing dropping. Make sure the chain rings aren't excessively worn could cause the chain to jump off and drop.

Really I have had no problems with dropping ever since I got the short cage and shortened my chain, with an 8spd xt cass.

the cassette should have nothing to do with the chain dropping... just make sure the spring in the rear deraileur is good and stiff... then run as short of a chain as you can...

could you pull apart an e-type front derailleur and just run the plate? it would keep the chain from falling into bad places at the very least...

you gotta put some kinda guide or derailleur up front or it will keep dropping. Or maybe even use a double bash guard setup (I don't know if this is legal in trials competitions or not) to guide the chain.

I've been using this for the past 3 years. I LOVE that thing! Works like a charm and it's dirt cheap!

u can always single speed it by removing the top pully of the rear d. chain line is key in trials. find ur sweet gear and shorten there. tight like a virgin.

I just cut the outside of a front derailleur off, then played with the screws and pretty much jammed it up against the chainring, but shortening the chain works well just make sure you put it into the tallest gear before you shorten it..my friend made the mistake of taking off too many links and he couldnt go up past 4th gear..
